Its that time of year again! Everyone is getting back into routines and students are moving back to campus! When students are away at school, much of their time is spent in their dorm room. Their home away from home needs to be a multi-functional space to enjoy. Most dorms supply two beds (with stack-able option) and two desks with chairs. The rest of the room is a blank canvas for you to create a space that represents YOU! Utilizing these tips will help create a space that is both functional and cool. 1) Bedding- Set the tone for the room with your bedding. In such a small space, your bedding is going to take up a large portion of your room. Use bedding to create a focal point for the space and accessorize the rest of the room around it. 2) Add a Comfy Chair- Dorms are very limited on seating. A comfy chair will come in handy whether your studying for a test or having friends over to hangout. 3) Lighting- One simple and useful way to transform a space is with lighting. Whether you go with sparkly twinkle lights strung across the room or a cute desk lamp. Lighting is not only essential, but it is also a great tool to enhance the feel of a room. 4) A Dorm Fridge- This one may seem a little obvious, but you will need a place to keep your basic food and drinks for when the food hall is closed. A dorm fridge is just one more way that you can personalize your space. Tape and Chalk Paint are both great options to customize your mini-fridge. 5) Add A Rug- Dorm floors are usually cold and boring. Adding a rug will help warm the space and create a more home like experience. Have you lived in a dorm? Share your pictures in the comments. Have you ever noticed how you can drive down the same street every day and then a house goes up for sale and you think to yourself, "Wow, I have never noticed that house before". So what is it that sets apart the houses that you remember and notice from the row of houses that blend together? Curb Appeal. The first thing that you and everyone else sees when they look at your house. Curb appeal has the ability to convert your house from being just another house in the neighborhood into being the nice house down the street. Home owners don't have to spend a fortune to have curb appeal. With just a few simple DIY updates your home can look like something off of HGTV. Here are five tips to boost your homes exterior 1) Stencil your front porch - Whether you like the idea of a bright floral pattern, a faux wood look, or classic stripes stenciling is one way to draw the eye to your entry way. Check out this beautiful entry way created by thedempsterlogbook or check out this how-to video on Youtube: 2) Paint Your Front Door- High Impact, low cost, and hardly takes any time. Painting your front door is the perfect opportunity to let your personality shine through. Whether you decide to stick with Feng Shui and do a classic welcoming red or try something bolder like a bright lime green; you are sure to make a statement with a colorful front door. I personally love this bold blue featured on Prettyworld. 3) Spruce up old planters- Over time weather can cause beautiful planters to fade and become dingy looking. A quick spray paint can give new life to your current flower pots. With so many new choices for spray paint you can go with anything from a classic textured bronze to a sleek metallic similar to the one featured on Listotic. Home Depot has the Rust-oleum Metallic spray paint for $3.76 a can. 4) Spice-Up Your Garage Doors- Give the illusion of high-end garage doors by simply adding decorative hard-ware. For less than $10 and very little time you can create a more custom appearance. 5) Put Out A Welcome Mat- Welcome guests to your home with a message. For those who are more traditional, a classic home sweet home or welcome could work. However I personally love the idea of being silly with the message. Check out these awesome Door-mats I found from ShopjosieB on Etsy. Have you completed a DIY Curb Appeal Project? Let us know your ideas and share your thoughts!
According to the National Association of Realtors, 35 % of current home buyers are Millennials. Generation Y (Ages 18-35) are ready to buy homes, but their wish-list may be slightly different from the needs of past buyers.
Here are five things that are sure to grab this generations attention 1) Open Floor Plan- Generation Y loves to multi-task. An open floor plan allows home owners to be able to be everywhere that they need to be all at once. Whether they are entertaining guests while they finish cooking or watching the kids while they clean up after a meal. 2) Designated Laundry Room- Millennials prefer to have a designated room to do laundry. According to a survey completed by the National Association of Realtors 55% of generation Y would not consider buying a home that did not have a designated laundry room. 3) Storage- With the desire for an open clear space/floor-plan it is important for millennials to have plenty of space to store their belongings. This generation is willing to compromise on square footage, as long as they have plenty of storage. Items that top millennials lists are food pantries, large closets, & even a come back in linen closets. 4) Low- Maintenance- Millennials are very busy and very social. The last thing that they want to spend their time-off doing is working on their home. Low maintenance landscaping, siding, and decks are all highly desirable to young home- buyers. 5) Energy efficiency- With so much focus on going green, Generation Y is not only concerned with lowering their utility bills, but also helping the environment. Energy-saving appliances, windows and furnaces see a large return in investment. Small changes such as shade trees and CFL Light-bulbs can even make a difference. Many communities are even offering tax incentives for "Going Green".
